Interview with Dr. Hollingsworth

Today's I have the pleasure in interviewing a person that has a compassion on the care and well-being of one's health, and literally helps everyone that he interacts one-step at a time. While conducting this interviews in India, I pause, look around notice so many little children with no shoes, and those with shoes that inadequate for their users (using flip-flops to carry bags of cement)

I present Dr. Scott Richard Hollingsworth, an American Educated podiatrists who have the highest rates of re-tweets within his field of medicine.

How many years of school did you have attended to become a podiatrist, and where did you attend?

After high school, I attended Brigham young university in Provo Utah, For 5 years where I received my bachelor's degree in zoology and completed all the pre-med requirements. I chose to go to Podiatric Medical School in Des Moines Iowa, where I completed 4 years of medical school and received my medical degree as a doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree, after completing medical school I went to Reno Nevada where I completed a residency in surgery, I did over 500 surgeries on the foot and ankle during this time.

As a student, did you have any methods for studying that helped you?

as a student I had a job working nights where I was required to stay up and monitor a building with cameras, I was encouraged to study while at this job and allowed me to focus my attention on my studies daily, I was alone and would read out loud and this helped me hear say and read things greatly helping to internalize the vast amount of information a person has to learn to go to medical school.

Why did you select these/this school(s)

There are only 7 schools that teach Podiatric medicine and all are in us, Des Moines university had been a medical school for 100 years and was very respected.

Why you have chosen this field of specialty?

I have a probation problem in my feet that caused me to have a lot of knee pain, leg pain and  caused me to not be as active as I could have been in my younger years I was scheduled for arthroscopic surgery on my knee when I was 27 and I learned that it was caused by a biomechanical problem inherited from my parents, this was corrected my a doctor of Podiatric medicine and in 4 weeks my lifelong knee pain was gone, I cancelled my surgery, I learned that the problem causing my knee pain was pronation and that it is a common problem that a third of the population has,  I had it corrected and after 4 weeks my knee pain was gone.  I decided I wanted to help as many people as I could with this problem and other similar conditions so I decided to go into this field of medicine

You have practiced podiatry in the United States and in Canada, is there any significant differences on ……….(up to you)

Unlike the United States, In Canada very few people have been checked by a podiatrist, 2/3 of people have structural problems that when diagnosed by a doctor of Podiatric medicine can be corrected, close to the entire Canadian population is in need of being assessed.  There is no school to teach Podiatric medicine in Canada, consequently, most people with problems like I had are living with them and in need of help.  Practicing in Canada is exciting and rewarding for Someone in my field.

Do you have any other specific fields of interest relating to podiatry? (explain what is – literally)

My greatest interest is in biomechanics, this is only taught in Podiatric medical school and allows someone with my training to diagnose and correct problems that would otherwise lead to serious mobility issues later in life, I find this field exciting and is the area of medicine I think is most needed in Canada. Everyone should be assessed u a doctor of Podiatric medicine, just like we are checked by an eye doctor or dentist, yet less than 5 percent of the population has.

Why does this interest you?

I enjoy changing people’s lives for the better, so many people need this care,  I find this the most exciting area of medicine.

You’re married with several children, you are a family man- How is your work-life balance?-Explain how you handle work -life balance?

I’ve always worked harder than I want to, I find the demand for what I do is high so I endeavor to  help as many people as I can, I work long days and travel a lot, but I also take time off to be with my family

What other interests or hobbies do you pursue in your spare time (if you have any?) and why, or how does it benefit you (if it does.)

My favorite thing is to sail, I find it relaxing, thrilling and gives me great opportunities to have quality time with my family and friends.

Have you attended any conferences that you would recommend to other fellow practionair that specializes or share the same interests as you?

I try to attend all the biomechanics conferences that I can, there is so much to learn, this field is expanding very quickly as we learn what causes more and more pathology and how to correct more and more problems.

How do you see medicine evolve in the future  (you can specify different time periods)

People are becoming more health-conscious and educated and more and more seeking out doctors of Podiatric medicine, I see the future where everyone is getting screened and is living more active and healthy lifestyles as we age.

Online rating systems, that rank professionals are very popular, what do you like about them? And what do you not like about them?

Online ratings, great when people take the time to tell their experiences, but often don’t reflect how many people have great experiences
